百香果為西番蓮科多年生作物，原產於南美洲巴西，最早在１９０１至１９０７年間由日本人引入紫色種，目前已成為本省低海拔山區野果。因其花朵盛開時像時鐘表面的刻劃，日本人稱之為「時計草」；本省則叫它「時計果」或「時鐘果」，而後有食品公司將果實製成果汁罐頭，取名百香果汁，並廣受國內消費者所喜愛，至今遂變成通俗化的名字。１９６４年又由美國人，大量引入黃色種，先後在彰化縣大村鄉、南投埔里、魚池等地推廣栽培，果汁粗製後，運往美國再精製罐頭供應美軍。近年來更有雜交大型紫色種「台農１號」推廣栽種。近年來國人對於飲料需求量激增，百香果汁漸為人們所重視，價格也不差，南投魚池、台東及中部地區為主要產區。品種有紫色種、黃色種、雜交種

The yellow granadilla has a rather unclear story; yellow fruits bought between 1912 and 1914 on Covent Garden market in London were sent to the agricultural experimental station of Guames in Argentina, from there to the USA department of agriculture in 1915 and then seeds were dispatched in Australia and New-Zealand. It seems to have originated through a chance mutant, which interest is to be resistant to soil-based diseases and pest like nematods.
It is more sensitive to cold than the purple fruited form, better grown from sea-level to 1200 feet high, on fertile well drained soils. Both leaves and flowers are bigger and more colorful too, the stem being often reddish to dark purple. The fruit is also bigger but somewhat acid, usually processed for juice extracts or pulps.

C.百香果「台農一號」（Tainung NO.1）：本品種係農試所鳳山熱帶園藝試驗分所，以紫色種為母本，黃色種為父本的雜交後代選育出，具有自交親和性，故極易由蟲媒授粉即可結果， 果實成熟時，果皮呈鮮紅色，略為光滑，果實最大達 120 公克，平均果重 62.8 公克，果汁率高，果肉呈濃黃色，香味濃烈。

百香果屬西番蓮科（Passifloraceae），百香果是多年生蔓性藤本的植物，原產於巴西，1610 年間傳入歐洲，當時西班牙傳教士發現此花至覺珍奇，花型極似基督之十字架刑具，柱頭上 3 個分裂，極似 3 根釘，花瓣紅斑、恰似耶穌頭部被薔薇刺出血形象，5 個花藥，恰似受傷傷痕，此花花形正象徵耶穌心胸苦悶，西班牙人以 Passioflos 名之，直譯之為「苦悶之花」。台灣於 1901~1907 年日本人田代安定氏自東京石川植物園引 入紫色種，目前已成為低海拔山區野果。百香果的花很像古時流行的時鐘字盤，日本人稱之為「時計果」，早期中國自西方引進之物均冠以「西番」之名，故有西番果之別稱。

大果西番蓮（學名：Passiflora quadrangularis）是西番蓮屬的植物中，果實最大的一種。它是分佈於熱帶美洲的一種多年生植物，擁有心形的、卵形的或是尖形的平滑葉子。其葉柄（petiole）有四到六個腺體。它的根部可用來當作催吐劑與麻醉藥品。它也擁有很香的花並能結出長橢圓形的果實，果實中包含了許多的種子，嵌入於稍帶酸味但可食用的假種皮之中。
大果西番蓮有時候會在溫室中種植。其他幾種西番蓮屬的植物果實都可以食用，如樟葉西番蓮（Passiflora laurifolia）被當作「水檸檬」（Water lemon）以及蘋果狀西番蓮（Passiflora maliformis）被當作西印度群島的「甜葫蘆」（Sweet calabash）。
該果實果肉厚且種子少。和百香果一樣可供食用，但甜度、酸度較一般百香果低。可製果汁，未成熟果實的果肉也可當蔬菜煮食。
